Director Asia Pacific
Ted Varani is an international executive with a wide track record of successfully aligning effective technical solutions to clients' complex needs. Originally from the US, he has been intricately involved in the Asia-Pacific region for most of the past 20 years.
Ted initially conducted sales and market development of class II and III medical devices in Japan. He later led the worldwide sales of diagnostic medical devices, software and communication components developed by a venture-backed US start-up. Demonstrating an aptitude for understanding the multifaceted problems of clients, Ted created new distributorships worldwide and oversaw product registrations in Japan and Korea, thereby increasing total overseas revenue by 30%.
Familiarity with Asia led Ted to the public utility sector where he pioneered corporate development of public-private rail and road transport projects in the region for the Veolia Environment group. Ted led an acquisition drive in Japan and served as project manager for several major RFPs. Ted's singular accomplishment in this period was the securing of a long-term US $600 million contract for the operation and maintenance of a PPP rail line in South Korea, firmly implanting the company in the region and delivering a profitable, highly-visible signature reference for local government clients.
Ted was sent as managing director of a joint-venture investment in the Chinese road transport sector based in the city of Nanjing. Here Ted took on a portfolio of six regional operations with combined annual revenue of US $50 million. He implemented rigorous cost control measures, brought budget and reporting practices up to international norms and partnered with local government to optimize operational issues. After three years in this role, Ted handed off a stable and profitable portfolio of companies to localized Chinese management.
From here Ted joined a technical team dedicated to the development of digital services in the field of smart cities. He successfully led the launch of a location-based smartphone tool delivering local transport data and social media tools to individual users in three major metropolitan areas.
In early 2013 Ted joined Alazen's management team to direct development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Ted holds an MBA from the HEC School of Management in Paris, and graduated with honours from the University of Central Florida having earned a bachelor degree in political science and international relations. Possessing a natural talent for languages, he speaks fluent Japanese and French, professional level Chinese and conversant Spanish and Italian. An avid traveller, Ted has visited some 60 countries worldwide for both business and pleasure including a gap year spent traveling from Hong Kong to Milan overland via India and the Middle East. He enjoys playing rock and roll guitar, running, scuba diving, hiking, and reading about business and history. Ted currently resides in Shanghai with his wife Laure, and their young daughter Victoria.
